About Endodontics

Endodontics has been recognized by the American Dental Association
as a specialty of dentistry since 1963. As a specialist, an endodontist
has completed a minimum of two additional years of advanced training
after graduating from dental school.

This branch of dentistry is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of
diseases of the dental pulp (root canal tissue) and adjacent supporting
structures. An endodontist is also experienced in determining the source
of oral and facial pain and in the treatment of dental traumatic injuries.

Generally, a patient is referred to an endodontist by a family dentist for a
diagnosis or for the completion of a specific procedure. After a
comprehensive evaluation, your endodontist will determine the
diagnosis, discuss treatment alternatives, and confirm which treatment
option is best for the patient.

The primary goals of endodontic procedures include the resolution of
dental pain, infection, and inflammation. Most importantly, successful
endodontic treatment allows a patient to retain a natural tooth which
would otherwise require extraction.
